On Tuesday, March 27, GERM 3221 – the second course of our EUROTECH series – visited Trumpf, Inc in Farmington, CT. We were greeted by Maren-Anne Reichert, a sales intern at Trumpf from Baden-Württemberg, Germany. She gave us a short presentation about the company and introduced us to Marco, another German speaking intern at Trumpf, who gave us a tour of the assembly facility. Last part of our visit was a machine demonstration by an engineer. He explained and showed us a laser cutting machine in action. It is one of the machines Trumpf produces. In preparation for the company visit we learned about lean management, a management philosophy that Trumpf implemented to minimize waste, and we studied relevant technical vocab in context. The visit at Trumpf was the second of the semester. Earlier, we visited Karl Storz in Charlton, MA. The lectures and tours are an integral part of the class as we focus on how to network and prepare for working and studying in a German-speaking country.
