The German Section is delighted to invite you to a lecture by Fatima El-Tayeb on Thursday, September 17, part of the Fall 2026 German Studies Colloquium and generously sponsored by UCHI.

Dr. El-Tayeb is Chair and Professor of Ethnicity, Race & Migration and of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Yale University. Her books include Un/German: Racialized Otherness in Post-Cold War Europe (Cornell University Press, 2025) and European Others: Queering Ethnicity in Postnational Europe (University of Minnesota Press, 2011).

Drawing on her most recent book, the lecture will focus on the status of Sinti and Roma communities in contemporary Germany. The title is “Whose Story? German Memory Culture and Roma Resistance.”

The lecture will take place from 1:00–2:30 PM in SHH 236, and is open to all.

Prof. El-Tayeb will also lead a graduate student workshop that afternoon, from 3:00–4:30 PM. The workshop is open to all graduate students in LCL and beyond. RSVP is required, as there are two pre-circulated chapters we will read in preparation ahead of time.
