New Baden-Württemberg / Connecticut Tandem Project

The BW-CT EXCHANGE PROGRAM has launched another initiative during the pandemic, helping students connect across the Atlantic to learn and collaborate together before they start their experience abroad. Here’s Education Abroad’s news announcement:

“On January 28th, more than 20 students from UConn, Wesleyan University, and Southern Connecticut State University met with their counterparts from five German partner universities for the first time virtually.

This pilot program is facilitated by Professor Friedemann Weidauer from UConn’s German section, and Inga Poetzl, BW-CT Exchange Coordinator at Education Abroad, and profits from the unique partnership between the state of Connecticut (CT) and the German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg (BW).

Students from Connecticut, who plan to study at a university in BW, team up with one or two students from Connecticut’s German partner universities, who plan to come to the U.S. in the near future. The groups will meet on a weekly basis throughout the spring semester and discuss topics related to their respective home and host countries and academic systems. The goal is to prepare each other for the study abroad experience by sharing insider knowledge, as well as some of the do’s and don’ts, thereby increasing excitement about the upcoming adventure.

Students are encouraged to keep a journal, which they can submit at the end of the semester to earn academic credit. The BW-CT Tandem Project is one of several virtual alternatives that are being created to hold students over while they cannot travel in person, aiming at keeping “the study abroad bug” alive.”
