Every year, the Languages Graduate Student Association (LANGSA) organizes a conference for graduate students in the Humanities. This year, the conference took place on March 27, 2026, exploring the topic of ‘Remix in the Humanities’. Not only graduate students from UConn but also from all other universities in New England were invited.
The LANGSA board organized and hosted the event, including two members who are pursuing their PhD and MA degrees in the German Studies Section at LCL: Elisabeth Scharnhorst (Vice-President) and Marie Huebler (Hospitality Chair).
The conference day started with a short introduction by LANGSA Vice-President Elisabeth Scharnhorst, followed by panels on ‘Remix and Lyrics’, ‘Remix and Identity’, ‘Remix and Pedagogy’, and ‘Remix and Resistance’. Overall, the papers presented a great variety of ways to remix different ideas, ideologies, concepts, methodologies, and genres. Each panel was followed by a Q&A session that provided the opportunity for attendees to gather more insights into the presenter’s research.
The keynote speaker, Patrick Buhr from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), held an excellent presentation about his work. Mr. Buhr is a filmmaker and experimental animation artist whose work blends comedic autofiction with absurdist surrealism, often through playful, multilayered storytelling. In addition to his film practice, he creates interactive media art that extends his exploration of narrative and form into digital environments. His incorporation of remix in his work therefore made him the perfect fit for the keynote address.
Joshua Duvall, president of LANGSA, closed the conference with thankful words to all the amazing presenters and LCL and UCHI for funding the event. After the panels, the presenters and visitors came together for a mixer, for further exchange of research interests, questions, and to build connections in a relaxed atmosphere.
Overall, it was a well-attended and successful conference that showcased excellent graduate work and provided ample opportunity for networking and interdisciplinary discourse with fellow graduates.
