Dr. Erica Machulak offers Workshop April 3rd on “Beyond the Book: Hustles for Humanists”

On April 3rd, 2025, Erica Machulak, PhD, will hold a workshop on “Beyond the Book: Hustles for Humanists.” Dr. Machulak is the Founder of Hikma “to help researchers and entrepreneurs find new ways to engage with partners, collaborators and stakeholders.” The workshop features elements from the new book for hands-on integration with current projects and career goals:

In the era of fake news, it is critical that research be translated and mobilized as widely and accurately as possible. Among many journalists, however, academics are notorious for their caveats, sub-clauses, and unwillingness to tell a good story. This interactive workshop will offer a framework, tools, and actionable strategies to write research narratives that inform and engage non-specialist audiences. Medievalist turned social impact startup founder Erica Machulak will guide you through stories and exercises adapted from her new book, Hustles for Humanists: Build a Business with Purpose (Rutgers University Press, 2025).

Join us and explore how to create common ground, prioritize key points, preserve credibility, and invite curiosity. The principles we will discuss can be applied to a wide range of genres such as op-eds, business plans, funding proposals, and job interviews.

This concise, interactive session includes a brief presentation, reflective exercises, breakout discussions, and a closing group discussion where participants can ask questions and share ideas. Please bring a pen and paper.

The workshop takes place as part of the graduate seminar “The Multimodal Scholar,” a core course for the Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities and Media Studies. It is sponsored by the Humanities Institute, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Literatures, Languages, and Cultures.

Join us on April 3rd from 11-12:30 in SHH 236!
